Kutch Craft Traditions: The Artisans Behind Your Stole

  • por {{ author }} Indiascarves

Every Ajrakh stole in our collection begins not in a factory, but in a village. In the Kutch district of Gujarat — a vast, arid landscape bordering Pakistan — communities of artisans have practised the same textile traditions for generations. Their work is the foundation of everything we do at Indiascarves.

The Khatri Community

Ajrakh printing has been the speciality of the Khatri community for centuries. Originally from the Sindh province (now in Pakistan), Khatri families migrated to Kutch over generations, bringing their craft with them. Today, villages like Dhamadka and Ajrakhpur near Bhuj are home to master Ajrakh printers whose families have practised this craft for five or more generations.

The Craft Quarter of Bhuj

After the devastating earthquake of 2001, many Kutch artisans rebuilt their workshops and communities with help from craft organisations and the government. Today, Bhuj is home to a thriving craft ecosystem — not just Ajrakh, but also Rogan art (a rare thread painting technique), embroidery, bandhani tie-dye, and copper bell work. Visiting Bhuj is one of the most extraordinary craft experiences in India.

Natural Dyes and Sustainability

Traditional Ajrakh uses entirely natural dyes — indigo for blue, madder root or alizarin for red, iron-rich mud for black, and myrobalan (harda) as a mordant. The dyeing process uses water that has been naturally filtered, and many Kutch artisans have returned to fully natural dye practices after a period when synthetic dyes were common.

This commitment to natural materials means the dyes are gentler on the skin and on the environment — and produce the characteristic rich, earthy tones that make Ajrakh so distinctive.

Why We Source from Kutch

At Indiascarves, we believe that buying a handcrafted stole is about more than the object itself. It is about connecting with the artisan who made it, supporting a living craft tradition, and carrying forward a cultural heritage that has survived millennia. Every purchase directly supports Khatri artisan families in Kutch.
